Learn about the journey and long road it took to create our one-of-a-kind, custom Tx-Watt Amps.
How We Started
Tx-Watt Amps was the conceived and founded by Jack Kay from Buda / Dripping Springs, Texas (just outside of Austin). As a touring musician in the 60’s and 70’s, Jack played primarily on Marshalls and had to keep several of them in the truck to make sure he always had one available to play on. Whenever something broke, he would cannnibalize one of the Marshall carcasses for parts to keep others running. The lack of quality in commercially-made amplifiers always amazed him. And Marshall 100 Watt Superlead rigs were by no means cheap.
As a 21-year-old musician, he wanted to someday build a guitar player’s amp. Sound and tone would be the only focus. Cost of the build would not be a factor/consideration. As a Texas boy, the first name he came up with was “Texas Watt”. He realized that was too long and shortened it to “Tx-Watt.” When his record company folded around 1980, he came off the road and ended up doing nothing with the idea for more than 30 years. ( NOTE: the original “Legacy 70’s logo” and story behind it, is still available by request)
Finally, several years ago, he revived the Tx-Watt idea, contacted old friends whose life works were in analog amplification, transformers, speakers, and cabinets. After Several more years of R&D and road testing , Tx-Watt was born.
We have received Patent Pending status on the designs that make our amplifiers. The patent applies to the Tx-Watt Flagship/signature Series, as well as the Tx-Watt Tube Hybrid Guitar Amp and the Tx-Watt Tube Hybrid Bass Amp. Apparently, there really “Ain’t Nothin Else Like ‘Em!
What Makes our Amps Unique?
Truth be known, every popular guitar amp over the last 60 years has been based on only a handful of circuits.
We incorporate those famous 50’s and 60’s American and British tube/analog circuits in a way that allows the artist to mix and match the sub circuitry (48 combinations ) , “voicing” and building a tone stack to suit their personal tastes.
Our amps are built with top of the line components, creating the perfect sound and tone for each artist is our mission.
Why Tx-Watt ?
Built from Scratch
Our amps are hand built from scratch one at a time, with no short cuts in build out , parts, design, or time. They are hand wired, point to point, with no added circuitry. They have one input jack, custom Tx-Watt only transformers & speakers and custom solid pine cabinets.
Patent Pending Circuitry
We don’t emulate old analog sounds, we recreate British & American style tone stacks.
We give you the basic circuitry building blocks, and allow you to mix and match the sub circuitry, “voicing” and building a custom tone stack that can then be shifted up or down, yielding 48 combinations.
With the Flagship series, we work with each artist in the lab, tweaking each of the American and British circuits to personal tastes. Each artist leaves with a unique, one of a kind, “built for me” amp, with both American and British circuitry tailored for their individual tastes.
Serious as possible on the inside, as fun as we can get away with on the outside.
Tx-Watt Amps are all about fun. The knobs all go to 11, only using prime numbers. (OK – 9 isn’t prime but it gets a pass because of the Beatles).
We offer 60 kinds of vinyl including exotic coverings like fox, mink, cow hide and snake skin along with nearly as many kinds of grill cloth, handles and feet. And we don’t sell our amps without a flight case to protect it.
We offer three premium products which include:
Tx-Watt Signature Series Amp
Tube Hybrid Guitar Amp
Tube Hybrid Bass Amp
